why is Vista suddenly really slow?

Q: When i bought this computer an HP m9350f it has an AMD 9850 quad core 2.5ghz and 6 gigs of ram running vista home premium 64-bit. it was running fine for like a month but now, i dont know what happend i think it was something winupdate installed it just started to be really slow and i mean slow i think this last time i started it up it took like 10 mins for it to start up. the last update was an update to win defender. whenever i try to do anything whatever program i use it starts to hang comes back then hangs again i open up the task manager and looked at the cpu usage and its on avg 10%-2% and about 4gigs of ram is free but its still slow. can anyone help?
