The physical space on your hard drive is reused. Now, when you delete something, the references to it in the File Allocation Table are removed. Then, as the space on the drive is needed, it is rewritten to. This is how information can potentially be recovered. If the File Allocation table was adjusted to account for the delete, but the physical space where the data was written to has not been rewritten, that data can be recovered by software that knows what to look for. Data that is written to the hard drive is actually simply magnetic particles that are magnetically organized in a particular pattern, like the Ferrous Oxide particles that are magnetically organized on a video tape.
