Q: Is it better than Windows (assuming I won't need to buy or download much for it)
A: Knoppix is a Live CD. It's absolutely great and you can use it to fix both Linux and Windows installations and for simple tasks like web browsing, word processing, and playing solitaire games. That said, and while you can install it fairly straightforwardly, don't. First of all, it installs debian linux -- like Ubuntu it is a derivative of it in this case for more experienced users than Ubuntu. If this is your first Linux install UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE WINDOWS OFF YOUR MACHINE. It is a different operating system which makes different demands and expectations on you and takes time to get used to. Generally Dual Booting means repartitioning the hard drive. If you just go into it and do it without thinking that is a good way to ruin a Windows partition you may want to go back to, or to render the whole disk useless. These days, there are alternatives. One is to use live cds while you get used to linux (though most don't require you to log in, which is something you generally have to do when you install to disk. It's part of Linux's security design which makes it so hard to get viruses and so easy to dump them when you do occasionally get them. There is another alternative. You can install a dual boot, running on Windows, which does everything Knoppix does when installed by surfing over to http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com This wil result in your machine becoming a dual boot,, but it will not repartition your hard drive. Alternatively, you can surf over to http://www.wubi-installer.org and pick up Ubuntu the exact same way. Ubuntu is much less confusing and distressing for people unused to Linux, but it is otherwise very similar. You can install the OS from your Knoppix disk to disk if you like, but you will be installing Debian. While installing Debian can be difficult, when you are not using your Knoppix disk, it is highly recommended. And http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com installs debian.
