Q: This may be a stupid question but I was wondering what an IP address actually tells about a person. I know it can tell what city you're located in but does it give an actual physical address like (for example) 123 Blue Bird Street? Thanks
A: An IP address is one of 32bits in length. It cannot tell much about you personally. It can only tell who owns the IP address. The IP address is usally owned by the ISP, unless your a business, or purchased one from your ISP. So to answer your question, they can only find out information about your ISP. That's it, it is then your ISP who can divulge information about you to the person requesting it if local privacy laws and terms of privacy permit.
